Exploring CERN and Geneva: A Journey Through Science and History

My recent visit to Geneva was a trip filled with wonder, nostalgia, and intellectual curiosity. Staying with my son Thomas in his cosy apartment in St. Genis, France provided the perfect home base for my explorations.

The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, but the charm of Geneva’s old town and its efficient tram and bus system made the entire experience unforgettable.

The Journey Begins: From Manchester to Geneva

This trip was special for many reasons, but one of the biggest was that it was my first time leaving the UK in ten years! The journey itself was an adventure. I drove to Hebden Bridge, took the train to Manchester, and then boarded an EasyJet flight to Geneva. The anticipation built with every step, making my arrival in Switzerland 🇨🇭 even more exciting.

A Visit to CERN: Unravelling the Mysteries of the Universe

Stepping into CERN was like entering a realm where the fundamental secrets of the universe are probed with precision and passion.

As one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research, CERN is home to the famous Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where ground-breaking discoveries about particles and forces take place.

The guided tour was fascinating, walking us through interactive exhibits explaining particle physics, antimatter, and the Higgs boson. Seeing the laboratories and hearing about ongoing experiments made me appreciate the dedication of scientists working tirelessly to answer the biggest questions in physics.

The sheer scale of the underground accelerator was awe-inspiring, making it clear why CERN is at the forefront of modern physics.

Staying with Thomas: A Cosy Geneva Experience

Thomas’s apartment in St. Genis, just across the border in France, added an extra layer of adventure to the trip. We crossed between France and Switzerland multiple times a day, making the international border feel almost invisible! Spending time with him, sharing meals, and catching up on life’s happenings made the trip even more special. His local insights helped me navigate Geneva with ease, from finding the best coffee spots to knowing which trams to hop on.

Traveling Through Old Geneva: A Step Back in Time

Geneva’s public transport system made it effortless to explore the city. Trams and buses whisked me through the old town’s cobblestone streets and historic landmarks. Walking through the Place du Bourg-de-Four, Geneva’s oldest square, I marveled at the beautifully preserved architecture, the inviting cafés, and the quiet charm of hidden alleyways.

A visit to St. Pierre Cathedral ⛪ was a highlight, where climbing to the top rewarded me with breath-taking panoramic views of the city and Lake Geneva. The nearby Maison Tavel, Geneva’s oldest house, provided a glimpse into the city’s past, with exhibits detailing its transformation over the centuries.

Walking Through Vineyards

One of the most unexpected yet delightful parts of this trip was strolling through Geneva’s vineyards. The scenery was stunning, with rolling hills and picturesque views of the surrounding countryside. It was a peaceful contrast to the bustling city and a reminder of Geneva’s deep-rooted winemaking tradition.

Reflections on an Enriching Journey

Between the awe-inspiring science at CERN and the timeless beauty of Geneva’s old town, my visit was an unforgettable blend of discovery and nostalgia. The chance to stay with Thomas made it all the more meaningful, turning what could have been just another tourist experience into a deeply personal adventure.

As I boarded my flight home, I carried with me not just memories, but a renewed sense of wonder for both the vastness of the universe and the intricate details of human history. Geneva, with its fusion of scientific brilliance and historical charm, had left an indelible mark on my heart.
